Lee Mack is really Not Going Out as his kids profit from his TV sitcom success

The Would I Lie To You star said his teenage kids couldn’t give two hoots about his career but are happy to use his success to boost their bank balances. It comes as Lee’s sitcom Not Going Out returns to our screens for a 14th season.

TV sitcom king Lee Mack really is not going out that much – because his kids profit most from his TV sitcom success.

Mack has confessed his children have little interest in his career success – and just view his work as great for their bank balances.

Not Going Out star Mack says that his three kids enjoyed when his hit series returned because they could ask for more money.

He feels that writing the half an hour hits like Only Fools And Horses is a “dying art”.

Asked what his youngsters think of his success Lee confessed: “They pretty much as a general rule of thumb pay absolutely no interest in what I do for a living whatsoever.

“They range from 13 to about 20 and they probably see a trailer for my show and go. ‘Oh, he must have a bit of money now. He’s just done that!… Dad send me some money’

“But they don’t watch it (full series). They watch it occasionally. They watch a little bit of stuff. But my stuff isn’t really for a 13-year-old who’s got YouTube. You know, we live in a new world, don’t we?”

Mack is proud of how 14 seasons have entertained fans and how he remains a rare commodity in the Beeb’s prime time schedule.

“It is amazing I still sort of pinch myself a bit because of all the things I do. I didn’t grow up really watching much stand -up. I didn’t grow up watching panel games because they didn’t really exist much when I was younger, apart from the old one, but not as many as there are now.

“But I did grow up watching sitcoms. And so to not only be part of it, but also we’re sort of one of the last ones.

“There’s only two or three around, and Mrs. Brown’s Boys and Miranda. I don’t think Miranda’s been on for a while now. There used to be like 40 sitcoms on TV at any one moment.

“Now, I feel it’s a bit of a dying art form to be honest with you, it’s a bit of a shame, but I suppose if you’re a 21-year-old comic, you haven’t grown up watching the sitcoms like we were, because they sort of weren’t around 10 years ago, were they? So that’s the problem.”

Mack is currently the longest running sitcom show on TV, but has no chance of matching Last Of The Summer Wine’s four decade run.

He told Radio 5 Live: “We have done about 100 episodes and to catch Last Of The Summer Wine at 300, I’d have to be doing it three times as much. So I’d have to do it another 40 years which would make me 96.”
