EXCLUSIVE: The mental health of Love Island contestants is a top priority, producers say, with counsellors on hand 24-7, as well as water and sun cream charts and training on dealing with fame
Love Island has counsellors on stand-by at the show’s villa 24 hours a day. Bosses are making sure contestants have access to mental health support at all times over fears for their wellbeing.
The show is famed for being so dramatic that it’s difficult to cope with. Executive producer Mike Spencer-Hayter told the Daily Star Sunday: “We always have a psychologist on site. Our welfare is second to none. It is very robust.”
Bosses also log how much water contestants are drinking and how much sun cream they are using. Mike added: “We have and always will take care of the contestants. We are always monitoring them.
“There is a chart for water and a chart for sun cream to make sure they are keeping on top of that.
“Every detail is covered and looked at. It’s our responsibility to make sure they have the best time possible.”
ITV has insisted it has an extensive duty of care service available to all contestants. That includes training in how to deal with social media, fame and finances.
A spokesperson said: “They will be offered a full package of measures to ensure they remain supported prior to, during and after the filming period on the show.”
The new series kicks off tomorrow at 9pm on ITV2, and thanks to the bosses making a big change to the show’s villa, the new series is set to be the hottest in history.
A new intimate area has been added to the outdoor section for contestants to enjoy. It is a trampoline across the swimming pool that has capacity for four people to be on at the same time.
It has been added to encourage the sexy singletons to get close. Executive producer Mike Spencer-Hayter predicts there will be some racy behaviour on it.
He told the Daily Star: “The trampoline is nice. You can all sit there and enjoy the sun. You can see everything from there, so you can see what’s going on.
“I don’t think you would have sex on there, but it can take the weight of four people. But you can gossip or get off with each other.”
In a surprising move, bosses are planning to air any saucy antics that happen on the trampoline. Mike said: “If that happens, we show it. The trampoline is a lovely place to canoodle.”
