Love Island fans weren’t too happy with one star’s comment about 9-5 jobs.
The ITV dating hit returned with its new series on Monday night (June 9), but 22-year-old Shakira Khan got on the wrong side of some viewers when she declared her co-star was “too glamorous for a 9-5” job. The brunette beauty from Burnley was chatting to 25-year-old Meg Moore at the start of the first episode.
The pair were chatting about what they did for a living when Shakira, who works in marketing, suggested her new pal was too glam for office life. Shakira asked Meg: “What do you, then?”
Megan asked Shakira to guess what job she had, to which Shakira said: “I don’t know. You’re too glamorous to do a 9-5.” Meg replied: “Really? Okay, what do I do then?”, with Shakira adding: “Something interesting.”
Megan revealed that she was a payroll specialist, prompting Shakira to brand her a “corporate girlie”. Shakira then shared that she works in sales and marketing.
Although Shakira’s comment may simply have been intended as a compliment to her new co-star, some fans didn’t like it. One user on X wrote: “Not too glamorous for a 9-5, oh dear”, and another penned: “what does “too glamorous to do a 9-5 even mean?”.
A third added: “Too gorgeous to do a 9-5??? What does that mean?”. A twist at the end of the episode saw one unlucky female Islander evicted from the villa already, with American bombshell Tony Laites joining the show as a bombshell.
Shakira, who was left single in the episode, insisted she won’t be having sex during her time in the villa. She told Daily Star: “I told my family [about the show] and they’re over the moon.
“So buzzing, my dad’s like a Love Island super-fan. He’s watched every season. He’s buzzing for it. He just said, ‘Don’t have sex on TV!’. Definitely not! Definitely not.”
Asked if she’d be tempted to do stuff if she found a connection in the villa, she replied: “No, off-limits, and I think it’s easy to forget [about time] when you’re in there from what I’ve heard that eight weeks seems a lot longer.
“For me, sex after eight weeks? Bit of a no-go. I’m quite particular, I like to be wined and dined first [laughs].”
Asked what her type is, she said: “Someone who’s witty, really funny, is someone who can make me laugh until my tummy hurts. Obviously big arms is a bonus, someone who’s good looking, but I’m sure they’ll all be absolutely lush [in the villa].
“Someone who is going to make me laugh when I’m 80 and we’re old and we’re on a porch with our little grandkids.”
