Queen of Pop Madonna has hit out at President Trump for referring to himself as the “king”, telling her 2.8m followers that if it’s a joke she’s “not laughing” at it
Madonna has blasted President Trump for calling himself the “king”.
It’s not the first time the 66-year-old pop icon has clashed with the 78-year-old US president. Back in 2017, he branded her a “disgrace” after she slammed him at the Women’s March and told the crowd she was thinking of blowing up the White House.
The Like A Virgin hitmaker has never been afraid to speak her mind and last year hit back at critics who disliked her saucy antics because of her age. However, she’s now had another pop at Trump, who has returned to office and vowed to bring back the “golden age of America”.
On Friday (February 21) she took to X, formerly Twitter, and wrote: “I thought this country was built by Europeans, escaping living under the rule of a King, to establish a New World governed by the people. Currently we have a president who calls Himself. Our King If this is a joke, I’m not laughing.”
Trump wrote on his online platform Truth Social: “CONGESTION PRICING IS DEAD. Manhattan, and all of New York, is SAVED. LONG LIVE THE KING!”. The White House proceeded to share the quote on social media with an AI-generated image of Trump grinning on a fake Time magazine cover with a golden crown.
It came after he announced plans to axe New York’s congestion pricing program. The congestion pricing plan charges vehicles entering the city in certain areas.
It’s not the first time Madonna has ripped into Trump’s administration. In January, she slammed it for scrapping diversity, equity and inclusivity initiatives within government and rolling back protections for transgender people.
“It’s so sad to watch our new government slowly dismantling all the freedoms we have fought for and won over the years,” she wrote. “Don’t give up the fight!”.
It came just hours after Trump had signed an executive order restricting access to gender-affirming care for transgender children and teenagers under the age of 19. He also signed another executive order preventing transgender people from serving openly in the military.
In 2019, Madonna described Trump as an example of a man who is “overcompensating for how insecure they feel”. She told The New York Times Magazine: “A man who is secure with himself, a human who is secure with themselves, doesn’t have to go around bullying people all the time.”
She also made controversial comments during her speech at the Women’s March in 2017, where she told onlookers she’d thought “an awful lot about blowing up the White House”. Trump hit back in an interview with Fox News’ Sean Hannety.
He told him: “Honestly she’s disgusting. I think she hurt herself very badly. I think she hurt that whole cause. I thought her and a couple of others. But I thought she was in particular, I thought what she said was disgraceful to our country.”
Madonna later clarified her comments at the rally, claiming they were taken “wildly out of context”. “I am not a violent person,” she said on Instagram. “I do not promote violence and it’s important people hear and understand my speech in its entirety rather than one phrase,”
Trump has just signed an executive order to prevent transgender women from competing on female categories of sports. He has also declared the government will only recognise two genders.
