Married At First Sight Australia groom Eliot has faced backlash after he made an inappropriate comment about his ex-wife Lauren on Thursday
Married At First Sight Australia groom Eliot Donovan has faced backlash for “shaming” his ex-wife Lauren Hall with a “rude” remark.
The twelfth series of the hit reality show is well underway on E4, with a new batch of hopefuls taking the plunge into married life – and it’s been anything but smooth sailing.
In Thursday (March 27) night’s episode, the group was left speechless when former spouses Eliot and Lauren arrived at the dinner party with their new matches, Veronica and Clint.
Fans of MAFS will remember that 35-year-old entrepreneur Eliot and 37-year-old businesswoman Lauren were originally paired by the experts at the beginning of the season.
Before meeting his future wife, Eliot began lisitng his “non-negotiables” for a spouse. He vowed that he’d leave the altar if he was paired with a “trashy, obnoxious woman” or if he didn’t like his bride’s appearance, reports OK!

Despite his extensive list of deal-breakers, Eliot seemed pleased with Lauren when they first met, and the duo appeared to click instantly. But the honeymoon was far from blissful.
Following a string of awkward dinners, Eliot decided that Lauren didn’t meet his strict criteria and left the experiment after just two days.
This week, the experts decided to roll the dice again for Eliot and Lauren, giving them another shot at romance. Eliot was matched with 32-year-old personal trainer Veronica, while Lauren tied the knot with 43-year-old professional golfer Clint.
The nuptials seemed to go well, but the atmosphere turned frosty when the former spouses crossed paths at the dinner party.
The conversation at dinner focused on Lauren and Eliot’s surprise return to the show, sparking debate over whether Eliot regretted his past actions towards Lauren.
“I’ve done her a favour,” Eliot said, claiming he’d always been upfront about leaving the show if the spark wasn’t there with his partner.
As Lauren started to challenge her ex on his behaviour, Eliot tried to dodge the accusations.
“Stop denying everything that you said,” Lauren calmly urged him, only for Eliot to retort that they had both accepted they weren’t right for each other.
“You had about five margaritas, so you may not remember,” he fired back, leaving everyone gobsmacked, including his new bride Veronica.
“He’s obviously shown me a side of him I wasn’t expecting,” a stunned Veronica confided to the producers, slamming the remark as “disgusting”.
“How dare you shame her?” she later confronted Eliot at the table. “You did just now, about the drinks. I watched you do it.”
Veronica then expressed to the camera that the jibe was “a cheap shot”, continuing: “It doesn’t sit well with me. I don’t like it.”
MAFS fans were also left gobsmacked by Eliot’s comments, with many flocking to X (formerly Twitter) to vent their annoyance.
“Eliot absolutely should not have been allowed back, he’s so rude,” fumed one viewer, while another was in disbelief: “Oh my god, I can’t believe he just said that.”
Another chimed in with criticism about the show’s format, saying: “Eliot should not have been let back on the show with another wedding. Thought the matches were supposed to be right first time. Just shows the matching process is an absolute joke.”
Married at First Sight Australia airs Monday to Thursday on E4 at 7.30pm
