Men Behaving Badly was one of the biggest British sitcoms of the nineties, but lead star Martin Clunes has shut down questions about a series reboot for one very particular reason
Martin Clunes has revealed why Men Behaving Badly won’t be rebooted.
The TV legend, who played Gary on the hit comedy, is convinced its laddish humour would cause too much controversy on social media if new episodes were aired.
He said: “The world has changed. Social media has made journalists of everyone. There’s no nuance left, everything is polarised.”
“Most of what we said was inappropriate, but it was funny because we’d said it. Whereas now, if you say something inappropriate, that’s you finished, because this panel of judge-journalists on social media will have your guts for garters.”
Despite culture changing, co-star Neil Morrissey, who played Tony, still thinks a revival could happen. The actor is up for doing the gig if writer Simon Nye pens a decent script.
He said: “If Simon suddenly comes up with something that makes Martin and I go, ‘You know what, he’s done it again’ then we would consider it.”
Men Behaving Badly became one of the most popular comedies in TV history in the 90s. The show ran for six series and made its stars household names.
Neil said: “We were having a great time. It pushes you together, rather than separates you.”
“There was no one who was going to suddenly head off and do their own solo gig. No one would say, ‘I’m leaving the band. I’m going to do an Oasis.’”
Neil and Martin have reunited for a new show to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Men Behaving Badly. The pair went for a trip around France together to look back at their years of friendship.
Neil and Martin’s Bon Voyage is available to stream on U&Gold, and read the full interview in this week’s Radio Times.
Martin Clunes played Gary Strang in the comedy series alongside Neil Morrissey, who played Tony Smart. Caroline Quentin, Leslie Ash, Harry Enfield and Valeria Minifie also starred in the sitcom, which aired from 1992 to 1998.
The show lasted for six series and was filmed in and around West London, although it is implied the show takes place in Surrey throughout the series.
Tony and Gary are two immature men in their early thirties who share a flat together, spending most of their time drinking, watching television and chasing after women.
Deborah moves into the flat above them and both men become infatuated with her, despite Gary already being in a relationship with his girlfriend Dorothy.
