Actress Maggie Wheeler, who played his character Chandler Bing’s on-off love interest Janice Goralnik, said she felt a connection with the star after his tragic death.

“Lots of people talk about spirits showing up as birds. After Matthew died I was in a neighbour’s pool and I was alone and there was nobody else around, I was on my back and I was thinking about my brother, and I said: ‘Look out for him.”

“Two hawks flew over my head and flew past me. One circled around and came and got the other one and it flew past me, so that was a beautiful moment if you go for that kind of stuff.”

“There was an incredible moment, I haven’t talked about this anywhere, but if you believe in these kinds of things.’”

Maggie, 63, who starred in the smash hit telly comedy for 10 years, told the Still Here Hollywood podcast that Matthew’s death from a drug overdose in 2024 aged 54 “hit everybody.”

“People all over the world who loved him as Chandler, who benefitted from the joy that he spread by being a brilliant actor and by being so incredibly funny,” said the actress.

“The ripple, the wave was felt by so many. For me I felt just heartbroken and sad that he couldn’t make it out of this incredibly dark tunnel that he was in for so long.’”

The actress, who went on to appear in Ellen, Seinfeld, Will & Grace, How I Met Your Mother and Curb Your Enthusiasm, also lost her brother to drug addiction and believes the pair found each other in the heavens.

Maggie said she felt like a “rockstar” when she appeared alongside Perry in Friends. The crew used to keep her hidden from the studio audience so they would get a genuine surprise whenever her character appeared in the show.

“It was a sort of important characteristic of my entrances, my first entrances,” she said.

“So they would keep me hidden. I wasn’t even really allowed to wander around. The audience wouldn’t see me until the door opened, until I walked in.”

“They did that in many different ways depending on whether I was walking into the apartment or the coffee shop or wherever it might have been. It’s a little bit of a rockstar feeling.”
