Muppet Treasure Island is a beloved children’s film adored by many Jim Henson fans, but one of the characters is widely regarded as the creepiest Muppet to ever exist
Muppet Treasure Island stars the most unsettling puppet ever made.
Blind Pew is described as “a threatening pirate,” who hunts down Billy Bones throughout the film. His character design features blue-grey skin with a long snout, spiky teeth and long, unruly hair.
The villain wears a long brown coat, a brown scarf and a large pirate’s hat with a feather hanging down one side. Pew’s eyes are permanently closed because he is blind, as his name suggests.
Taking inspiration from the original story, Pew hopes to get his hands on the treasure map. However, while in the novel his blindness is used to make him appear even more terrifying, the Muppets version uses this trait for comic relief.
Throughout the Muppets retelling of the iconic adventure story, Pew makes a number of hilarious slip-ups such as mistaking Jim Hawkins for a woman and grabbing a decapitated moose head.
Pew also speaks with a French accent and in his final scene, the blind Muppet can be seen wandering aimlessly through the flames of a burning inn uttering the words: “I think I smell something burning, no?”
Although Pew is a comedic character, his design is noticeably scarier than the beloved Muppets fans are used to – his creepy outfit and unsettling features are a far cry from the bright colours and welcoming faces of Kermit and Miss Piggy.
Over the years, fans have compared Blind Pew to the Skeksis in Jim Henson’s 1982 film The Dark Crystal. The creatures are awful looking, bird-like beings with pointed beaks, bony fingers and permanent scowls.
They are described as: “Tall and reptilian in appearance, the Skeksis posed as benevolent caretakers of the Crystal, while in reality leeching off its power in order to prolong their lives, thus causing the spread of the Darkening.”
