The new Snow White movie is featuring a real dwarf after Disney faced backlash for using computer generated characters instead of real actors.

British performer George Appleby plays Quigg, who is one of the heroes in the Disney live action flick. His character is one of a team of bandits trying to overthrow the Evil Queen, played by Gal Gadot. He appears throughout the film and is central to the storyline.

An insider said: “George plays one of the key characters in Snow White. He’s part of the main storyline about the residents of the kingdom trying to overthrow the Evil Queen. His performance is fantastic.”

George has been a successful actor for more than a decade. Most of his roles have been on TV shows with appearances on the small screen version of Willow, Game of Thrones, Sherlock, Life’s Too Short and Brassic.

The star was also a double for Peter Dinklage in film Cyrano.

George’s role in Snow White is likely to silence many of the critics who have slammed the film for not featuring real-life actors to play the seven dwarfs.

Bosses are under fire for using CGI technology to create animated characters for Happy, Sneezy, Grumpy, Dopey, Doc, Sleepy and Bashful.

Many are furious little people who struggle to get acting work weren’t given the chance to play the roles in the flick, which is a remake of the 1937 Disney classic Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.

In a response to the criticism, a Disney spokesperson said: “To avoid reinforcing stereotypes from the original animated film, we are taking a different approach with these seven characters and have been consulting with members of the dwarfism community. We look forward to sharing more as the film heads into production after a lengthy development period.”

Speaking to the Daily Mail, performer Choon Tan said the decision to use CGI was “absolutely absurd and discriminating in a sense”.

“There really is nothing wrong casting someone with dwarfism as a dwarf in any given opportunity,” he said.

“As long as we are treated equally and with respect, we’re usually more than happy to take on any acting roles that are suitable for us,” he added.

The film, which stars Rachel Zegler as Snow White and Ted Lasso actor Jeremy Swift as the voice of Doc, hits cinemas on Friday. Critics have praised the flick and its stars in early reviews.

Variety’s film reporter Katcy Stephan said: “Rachel Zegler is a shining supernova in #SnowWhite, beautifully embodying the graceful, gentle nature of the OG Disney princess.

“It’s a visual feast with show-stopping new musical numbers and, of course, dozens of enchanting animated animals.

“The screenplay wisely gives its heroine newfound depth through her fervent desire to become the leader her father believed she could be, and a love story that’s sweet as apple pie.”

Matt DeGroot from Crooked Media said: “Despite becoming an internet punching bag Disney’s remake of Snow White is actually mostly successful!”
