Black Sabbath legend Geezer Butler reckons the Ozzy Osbourne-fronted band could perform for fans from beyond the grave once they finish up next month with their farewell gig at Villa Park
Black Sabbath star Geezer Butler reckons the rock legends could perform for fans beyond the grave. The rockers are set to play one last farewell gig next month at Villa Park near where they grew up in Birmingham.
But bass player Geezer, 75, said they could be brought back to life with new tech like something seen in Jurassic Park. He said: “I’ve given up talking about the end of Sabbath. Every time I think or say it’s over, things like this show come along. Someone will probably have our DNA and resurrect us in the distant future… who knows?”
In Jurassic Park dinosaurs are cloned by scientists by extracting ancient DNA from mosquitoes which had sucked the blood of dinosaurs before they became fossilised.
There have been conflicting opinions among the band as to whether this really is their last gig.
Lead singer Ozzy Osbourne and guitarist Tony Iommi both think that ailing health spells the end. But Geezer and drummer Bill Ward have indicated to Mojo they would be up for more shows.
Ozzy, 76, said: “I’m not going to bore you with my physical challenges these days. Let’s just say, it’s a f****** lot!
“After this show, I’m going home, closing the door and will look back upon the great career I’ve had.
“But I’m done, done, done! You gotta know when to call it quits.”
Tony, 77, got the all-clear following treatment for lymphoma, but then had a growth removed from his throat and still has regular check-ups with his oncologist.
He said: “I had an appointment in the hospital yesterday.
“I’ve also got a problem with a trapped nerve in my neck – nine months and it won’t shift.
“When you get to our age, things just go wrong. We’ll probably keel over after two songs!”
Geezer is working on exercises to improve flexibility and prevent hand cramps, while Bill has been doing boxing exercises.
He added: “I’ll be 77 when we play that gig – that’s a whole other world, 77 and playing 26-inch bass drums. One could call it lunacy.
“I’ve got to be down in weight to be able to swerve and move and crash and thrash, I gotta be able to punch those bass drums.”
