McFly singer Tom Fletcher said he feels like the ‘luckiest songwriter in the world’, having penned the music for the Paddington Musical – despite the show leaving him a blubbering mess
Get the tissues ready… the Paddington musical is set to be a tearjerker. The West End show about the much-loved bear will be packed with emotional moments.
McFly star Tom Fletcher was hired to pen the songs and he’s warning it will have everyone in tears.
He told me: “Every time we show anyone the show, I cry my eyes out. “Seeing Paddington walk out on to the stage will make people cry. It’s so emotional and so magical. If I’m in the audience when anyone comes to see the show, I apologise in advance because it makes me an emotional wreck.”
Paddington’s been delighting audiences since the first book was released in 1958. In recent years, the three movies have become firm favourites with fans.
As you’d expect, Tom has felt the pressure to get the musical right before its opening at the Savoy Theatre on November 1.
He said: “I really hope that the music connects emotionally with people. When you’re working on a show about Paddington, there is a certain level of responsibility. You’re looking after a bear that everybody loves, but you have to put that to one side.
“There is so much inspiration that comes from these amazing stories and incredible films that has never been explored musically. I feel like the luckiest songwriter in the world.”
It’s not the only reason Tom has to be weepy. The singer was rushed to hospital last month, looking like he had been “smashed in the face”.
On social media, Tom explained that he’d experienced a flare-up from an autoimmune condition he has been battling – uveitis, which triggers inflammation in a part of the eye.
He took to Instagram to say: “My autoimmune thing flared up out of nowhere. Woke up feeling (and looking) like I’d been smashed in the face! This is after it had calmed down and I could see again.”
Tom added: “Not the day I had planned” before revealing that he would be on medication for the next six weeks.
The 39 year old celeb, who lives in Richmond, London with his wife and their three kids, had to nip over to the A&E at The Western Eye Hospital for some urgent care. He told his followers: “Hate having to come here but so thankful it exists! The doctors and nurses have helped me out so many times now.”
