Paul Danan’s cause of death confirmed in heartbreaking coroner update

Paul Danan’s cause of death has been confirmed at an inquest.

The Hollyoaks star died in January at the age of 46 and it has now been confirmed that the primary cause was “combined toxicity of heroin, methadone, codeine, pregabalin, cocaine and zopiclone, with a secondary contributory finding of benzodiazepine”.

Coroner Marie Voisin decided to adjourn today’s inquest in order to receive detailed reports and in turn scheduled in a new date of May 28 for a full hearing.

The coroner’s hearing was also told that Paul was found unresponsive at his flat in Bath Road, Brislington, and paramedics were called at 5.20pm on January 15.

The actor, who starred as Sol Patrick from 1997 to 2001 on the Channel 4 soap, was pronounced dead at the scene.

A statement from Avon and Somerset Police at the time said: “Officers attended a property in Brislington, Bristol, at around 5.20pm yesterday (January 15) where sadly a man in his 40s was declared deceased by paramedics.”

The star’s management company Independent Creative PR said: “It is with heavy hearts that we share the tragic news of the passing of Paul Danan at just 46 years old. Known for his television presence, exceptional talent and unwavering kindness, Paul was a beacon of light to so many.

“His untimely departure will leave irreplaceable voids in the lives of all who knew him. During this difficult time, we kindly request respect and privacy for Paul’s family, friends, and colleagues.”

It was reported at the time that the actor had been due to appear at Warrington Magistrates’ Court, charged with possessing several bags of cocaine and a “quantity” of cannabis.

Danan was also known for reality TV shows like Celebrity Love Island, Celebrity Coach Trip and Celebrity Big Brother, where he was a housemate in 2017.

He has his share of personal problems, and last year told how he nearly died because of a vaping addiction. He told The Sun : “I was dead — it’s a miracle I’m here.”

“I’m upstairs puffing away on my vape then suddenly I lost my breath and collapsed,” he said. “My family called for an ambulance and started giving me CPR, then police arrived and took over before paramedics took me to hospital. I was on a machine in ICU and ended up with pneumonia.”

Danan also battled substance abuse problems and did several stints in rehab.
