The ending of Severance season 2 Cold Harbor, saw Mark S (Adam Scott) make a life-changing decision
The season two finale of hit show Severance was originally set to end on a very different note than what fans were ultimately treated to.
In episode 10, Cold Harbor, audiences watched as Mark S (played by Adam Scott) aided his Outie’s wife Gemma Scout (played by Dichen Lachman) in her daring escape from the clutches of Lumon. Yet, Mark’s Innie decided to remain with Helly R (Britt Lower), as they dashed through Lumon’s maze-like halls, desperately trying to dodge their pursuers for just a bit longer.
On The Severance Podcast, hosted by Ben Stiller and Adam Scott, the duo discussed how the second season was initially intended to end.
Star Adam, 51, said: “In the scene when I’m at the door and Helly appears and kinda going back and forth, that was always the end point for the season, that’s right from long ago?”
Ben Stiller, 59, who serves as an executive producer and director, aded: “That’s right. We always knew we were headed there,” reports the Irish Star.
Adam recalled: “But what I also remember, and it’s interesting to think about that now, that the thought at one point was to end the season before the choice was made.”
Ben elaborated: “Early on, we thought about maybe we’ll have you in the middle of a hallway looking at Gemma, looking at Helly and that would be the end.
“But it really felt clear to me and I think to [creator] Dan [Erickson] and you as we start to talk about it that we didn’t want to end on another cliffhanger like that.”
Adam agreed, saying: “Yeah, it would feel like we’re trying to beat the first one.”
Luckily, fans finally discovered who Innie Mark chose, but this revelation has sparked a flurry of questions about the future direction of the storyline.
With the third season officially confirmed and Ben assuring fans that they won’t have to endure another three-year hiatus between series, it seems answers may be forthcoming sooner than expected.
The podcast also welcomed guest stars Zach Cherry, who plays Dylan, and Britt Lower, known for her role as Helly/Helena, to share their experiences filming Cold Harbor.
Cherry, 37, reflected on the finale, saying: “I think seeing the way Dichen reacted to it as Gemma was so impactful in terms of the confusion and the hurt. Because she’s not aware of all this additional context.
“She is just like, ‘What is happening? That’s my husband. Why is he not coming out here with me?
“That drove it through in a way I didn’t necessarily expect to feel that much about that moment because I knew it was coming. But seeing the way she was reacting really did make that powerful.”
Britt, 39, found it “satisfying” to see Gemma escape the “hell” Lumon had subjected her to over two years on the testing floor.
However, she also confessed to being emotionally shattered while filming Mark and Helly’s final scenes, as he completed the Cold Harbor file in MDR under the questionable guidance of a Kier Eagan (voiced by Marc Geller) animatronic.
She recalled: “I remember it just being a really emotional day. Firstly, the lights were low and we’re very rarely in the dark in MDR, so it already created this mood of there was sort of an ending coming. We’d been working on the show for four or five years and in this room that we’ve had so many scenes, so many memories.”
Britt detailed how director Ben approached her with some feedback and she noticed his eyes “welling up”, which left her feeling “choked” up.
She continued: “Then it had this knock-on effect, I couldn’t stop crying.”
Adam echoed Britt’s sentiments and remembered a moment when he glanced at his co-star: “Britt, you were just a wreck and it was so sad and I just felt like we were really connected and it was towards the end of shooting and we were all just really in it.”
