Timothée Chalamet appeared to have had just one word to say when he was beaten to the best actor gong at the Oscars.

The star, 29, was nominated for the top award for his performance as singer-songwriter Bob Dylan in the movie A Complete Unknown. However, he lost out to Hollywood heavyweight Adrien Brody, who got the nod for The Brutalist on the night.

Footage from the glam event in Los Angeles captured the nominees responding as Adrien’s name was read out. According to the Mirror, lip reader Jeremy Freeman reckons Timothee said “yeah”, although it isn’t clear whether he was responding to the announcement or someone around him.

Body language expert Judi James told how Timothee – who was accompanied by his girlfriend Kylie Jenner at the ceremony – handled the loss like a pro and “managed to avoid any flinch of disappointment” when Adrien was revealed to be the winner.

“Timothee opted for the grown-up pose for the split-screen here, lifting his head to be fully visible to the cameras despite the risk of losing out on yet another award for his role in A Complete Unknown,” said James.

“He had won best actor at the SAGs though so his face-baring might have signalled a new sense of optimism.

“He managed to avoid any flinch of disappointment when Brody’s name was called but during his speech at the SAGS (Screen Actors Guild Awards) he revealed openly his levels of burning ambition to be ‘The best’ so this had to hurt.”

The actor has been nominated for a slew of accolades for his performance in A Complete Unknown, which charts Dylan’s rise in the music industry. While he missed out at the Oscars, Critics’ Choice Awards and Baftas, he did win Outstanding Lead Actor in a Motion Picture at the Screen Actors Guild Awards.
