It’s eight years since actor Bill Paxton died at the age of 61. His cause of death was listed as a stroke.
Known for roles in Titanic, Aliens, Twister and Apollo 13 among others, his tragic death saw an outpouring of grief. He was remembered in that year’s Oscars In Memoriam segment, just one day after his death, with Jennifer Aniston visibly upset.
The 2017 Timothee Chalamet movie Call Me By Your Name was dedicated to Bill in his memory, too. The star had been the best friend of the movie’s producer Peter Spears’ husband Brian Swardstrom.
A number of other movies were dedicated to his memory, including the 2019 John Travolta movie The Fanatic and frequent collaborator James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way Of Water.
But as well as grief, there was anger. with his family filing a wrongful death lawsuit. However before we get to that, we need to go back to the start of Bill’s life.
Not long before his death, he revealed while speaking with Marc Maron that he was living with a damaged aortic heart valve. It was the result of rheumatic fever which he had as a child.
He underwent open-heart surgery at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center on February 14, 2017 to repair the valve. The op was also set to fix an aortic aneurysm.
The next day he was taken in for emergency surgery to repair a damaged coronary artery. Sadly, from then, his condition deteriorated.
Ten days after the second surgery, Bill died from a stroke on February 25, 2017. He was cremated, with his ashes buried at the Forest Lawn Memorial Park of Hollywood Hills.
However his family launched a wrongful death lawsuit against the surgeon, Ali Khoynezhad. It alleged that the surgeon used “high-risk and unconventional” methods and had not been in the operating room when Bill had developed complications, including tachycardia.
It was due to go to trial in Los Angeles Superior Court in March 2022, however the family reached a partial settlement a month earlier with General Anaesthesia Specialists Partnership for $1million. In August of the same year, the case was settled under undisclosed terms agains both the hospital and surgeon.
