Hamilton Bohannon dead: Motown star whose songs were sampled by Jay-Z dies

Hamilton Bohannon who was one of the most successful Motown musicians of his time as sadly died.

The drummer has 78-years-old and backed the likes of Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye during their careers.

The news was announced in his local newspaper in Georgia town where he was born has confirmed.

The Newman Times-Harald reported they had spoken to members of Bohannon’s family though did not confirm the cause of death.

During his career Bonannon worked with some of the biggest names in the industry including his friend Jimi Hendrix.

The duo performed at the Royal Peacock venue in Atlanta.

After being spotted my Motown Records, Bohannon was snapped up to be Stevie Wonder’s drummer and bandleader.

He also enjoyed his own success with his group Bohannon and The Motown Sound.

The band played with everyone from Marvin Gaye to Diana Ross and the Supremes during life on the road.

Gushing over the music diva, Bohannon said of the experience: “I’ve never been to heaven but I bet that’s pretty close.”

In the UK the musician bagged himself three Top 40 hits.

South African Man, Foot Stompin’ Music and Disco Stomp.

Disco Stomp became his highest charting hit in the UK peaking at number 6 in 1975.

Bohannon’s music has been sampled by a string of music superstars.

Jay Z, Justin Timberlake and Snoop Dogg have all sampled his tracks as well as pop diva Mary J Blige.
