Paul O'Grady got his mum 'stoned' after eating cake laced with cannabis

Paul O’Grady once got his mum “stoned” on cannabis that he ate with Battenberg cake and jam.

The Lily Savage star said that his mother Molly found a lump of hash on the floor of his bedroom.

A power cut meant the pair were trapped indoors without anything to do – so they decided to mix up the drugs in their dinner for a fast high.

ITV regular Paul, 64, said: “We were sitting there snowbound with no electricity, no heating, nothing, and I told her you could eat it you know – so we did.

“And we had two pots of diabetic jam – no one was diabetic it was cheap in Boots – Battenberg Cake and chips.”

And as the drug kicked in Molly’s secrets started pouring out as she told her son her life story.

He admitted: “I was a trapped audience really and I got her life story which was really interesting because she had never spoken really in such depth.

“Or maybe it is because I hadn’t listened at the time being a callous teenager.”

The star said Molly was a “larger than life character” who passed away in 1988 when the presenter was 33.

He explained that his mum and her sisters, with their sharp wit and acid-tongued humour, had a huge influence on him.

Paul added: “My mum was quite a character and so were her two sisters. My aunty Chrissie could give you a look that would cut concrete but she was very funny at the same time.”

And his mother was not always so laid back about his wild lifestyle.

He joked: “When I was a teenager I would come home at 2am in the morning after clubbing it in Liverpool, bladdered, and my mother would appear on the landing on the stairs with one of those bottles of Lourdes water that are shaped like the Virgin Mary and I’d be lashed with holy water.”
