Kate Garraway breaks down in tears on GMB after Derek speaks in 'miracle'

Kate Garraway talked about “praying for a miracle” with Susanna Reid and Piers Morgan on Monday morning’s GMB, as she wiped away her tears.

The 53-year-old was opening up to her Good Morning Britain co-stars about the advances in her husband’s condition, after Derek Draper made a “breakthrough” in hospital.

Derek, also 53, has been in a state of minimum consciousness for months, having been placed in an induced coma after contracting Covid-19.

Last week, Kate revealed Derek had uttered his first word in months – “pain”.

Kate admitted she had been “praying” for her “second miracle,” and wondered if this could have been it.

Speaking about the moment he shared the devastating word, Kate explained doctors had encouraged Derek to respond verbally when moving him in his hospital bed.

She said: “We’ve kept on talking to him, and they would say ‘right we’re just going to move your arm, we’re just going to feel your leg’.”

Kate continued: “They did this, and he very clearly mouthed the word pain. There wasn’t a note, it was a little bit of a whisper.

“Everyone that was there, I wasn’t there at this point, stopped and couldn’t believe it and tried to get him to do it again.”

Later, Kate recalled witnessing it for herself, as she added: “Later I was watching and I saw him mouth it again, it is a huge breakthrough.

“It is a huge breakthrough, because, even though it’s obviously heartbreaking. Because what it means is he feels pain, which we don’t want, but it is a breakthrough because what it means…”

Suddenly, Kate was choked up by tears, as she was forced to pause the interview to gather herself, as Piers and Susanna looked on in sympathy.

She then continued: “Excuse me, sorry, what it means is he’s able to connect a sensation in his body, with his brain, and connect that with his mouth to shape the word pain.”

Kate finished: “So that says a lot, doesn’t it.”

Good Mornng Britain airs on weekdays at 6am on ITV.
