Glastonbury Festival 2021 cancelled due to coronavirus pandemic

Glastonbury 2021 has been officially cancelled due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the festival’s organisers have confirmed.

Michael and Emily Eavis announced the news on Thursday afternoon, explaining it was simply not possible for the festival to go ahead in the current climate.

The festival bosses assured ticket-holders, who originally secured tickets in October 2019, their deposits would still be valid for next year’s event.

Their statement read: “With great regret, we must announce that this year’s Glastonbury Festival will not take place, and that this will be another enforced fallow year for us.

“In spite of our efforts to move Heaven & Earth, it has become clear that we simply will not be able to make the Festival happen this year.”

The festival organisers apologised to fans for cancelling the festival for a second time, saying: “We are so sorry to let you all down.”

Their statement continued: “As with last year, we would like to offer all those who secured a ticket in October 2019 the opportunity to roll their £50 deposit over to next year, and guarantee the chance to buy a ticket for Glastonbury 2022.

“We are very appreciative of the faith and trust placed in us by those of you with deposits, and we are very confident we can deliver something really special for us all in 2022! We thank you for your incredible continued support and let’s look forward to better times ahead.”

Last year, Glastonbury’s 50th-anniversary festival was axed due to the pandemic, instead airing a televised alternative to the festival on BBC.

Before the festival was cancelled, over 90 names had been added to the line-up for the historic event, with Kendrick Lamar, Paul McCartney and Taylor Swift headlining.

Major acts like Dua Lipa, Manic Street Preachers, Primal Scream, AJ Tracey, Fatboy Slim, FKA Twigs were also due to perform.

Plugging the alternative broadcast at the time, BBC said: “Glastonbury may have had to cancel its 50th-anniversary festival this June, but we are still working to mark the weekend with a Glastonbury experience to celebrate the spirit of this unique event.

“We will bring the nation together and create a weekend of the best in music across radio, television and online with amazing performances for you to enjoy in the comfort of your home.”
