Piers Morgan has never shied away from speaking his mind about Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, especially when it comes to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s decision to leave their positions as senior working royals and move to Los Angeles.
While the couple initially outlined their hope was to split their time between both California and London, the coronavirus pandemic swept the world and they’ve ended up spending most of their time across the pond.
Meanwhile, there have been reports that Prince Harry isn’t “happy” with the prospect of his grandmother, the Queen, taking away his military titles when the decision to take them away is reviewed next month.
Upon hearing the reports, Good Morning Britain presenter Piers has weighed in and urged the Queen to stand by it.
Harry’s titles included Captain-General of the Royal Marines, Honorary Air Commandant of RAF Honington in Bury St Edmunds, and Commodore-in-Chief, Small Ships and Diving and Royal Naval Command.
“I don’t doubt for one moment that Harry cares passionately about the armed forces,” the GMB host said in his column for the Daily Mail.
The GMB host went on to praise Prince Harry’s military achievements, pointing out his own brother, Jeremy, is also a Lieutenant Colonel.
He continued: “But none of this justifies him being allowed to retain honorary military titles he was given through his royal status when he still performed royal duties.”
The presenter went on to say that just because no one is questioning the Duke’s “personal loyalty” to the military, it doesn’t mean the monarch or the UK public as a whole can trust his physical “commitment” to the military organisations he has represented in the past.
“Even if Harry did promise to fly endlessly back and forth across the Atlantic to fulfil all his military duties, vastly ramping up the size of his carbon footprint in the process, why should the Queen allow it?
“The bottom line is that once again, Harry wants to have to his royal cake and eat it,” Piers slammed, going on to claim Prince Harry’s determination to retain his titles also comes from his “knowledge” that his position as a royal is what gives him his “earning power”.
“I don’t think he should be able to use ANY of these titles now he’s renounced royal duty,” Piers went on.
“The moment he and his wife quit Britain for a new celebrity life in America, they gave up their right to trade off their royal association. Or rather they should have done, yet it didn’t happen.”
He added: “Instead, they’ve been allowed to ruthlessly and greedily exploit their titled regal status for huge financial gain and haven’t had to perform any of the humdrum royal duties that justify it.”
Continuing to criticise the royal couple, the presenter called their behaviour “outrageous” for “swanning around” the US and “selling themselves off their titles” and even went as far as to say he wouldn’t allow Harry and Meghan to be the Duke and Duchess of Sussex anymore if he was the Queen.
Bringing his point to a close, Piers added: “I’m sure she will do what she has always done throughout her magnificent reign, and that’s put the country and the Monarchy before personal feelings. And that means telling Harry he’s not getting his military titles back.
“He can’t be an absentee armchair general from 5000 miles away in Santa Barbara – just as he couldn’t have fought the Afghanistan war from his palace quarters in Kensington.”
