BBC Breakfast’s Dan Walker failed driving test after reversing around roundabout

BBC Breakfast host Dan Walker had to insist he is a “safe driver” on Wednesday morning’s show, as he admitted to failing his first driving test with five major faults.

The host was referring to a beached container ship in the Suez Canal when he said he got stuck during an attempted three-point-turn during his first test.

“I got five major faults on my first test, about five minutes in as well,” he sheepishly admitted. “I tried to reverse around a roundabout. It was a horrible moment all round.”

Co-host Sally Nugent asked: “What were you thinking?”

“I don’t know,” Dan chuckled.

Sally wondered if nerves had been responsible for the slip-up.

“No, not at all – I was enjoying myself,” Dan laughed. “I should have been paying attention, which is basically a life lesson.”

Weather presenter Carol Kirkwood insisted that he “let us know when you’re next going on the road please!”

To which Dan responded: “I’m a very safe driver, I’ll have you know!”

Viewers on Twitter weren’t so convinced.

One wrote: “A safe driver? … won’t need a taxi to take you to and from work each day then.”

That’s in reference to claims that Dan was “chauffeured” to the Salford studios back in 2019, at an alleged cost of £200 per day, according to insiders.

A BBC source reportedly told The Daily Mail that he does drive himself to work on occasion.

Perhaps Dan should stick to cycling from now on!

Dan took to Twitter himself to post a GIF taken from Austin Powers that he’d attempted to imitate on the show, of the titular character attempting to three-point-turn a yellow vehicle in a cramped corridor.

He captioned the GIF: “Morning” with a cry-laughing emoji.

One fan replied: “Dan on his driving test”.

Another said: “I belly laughed then! Chuffing love this one. Sums up us all sometimes.”

Someone else simply responded with a GIF of a child in a toy car, drifting around a corner.

The host didn’t confirm how many tries it eventually took him to pass his driving test – but we’re sure he got there eventually!
