Wrecking Ball singer Miley Cyrus has received backlash from fans after she promoted her upcoming Saturday Night Live appearance alongside business mogul Elon Musk.
The duo are currently scheduled to appear on the show together on May 8, but fans have been critical of the pairing.
In a playful online exchange to promote the upcoming show, Miley 28, was faced with hot-tempered comments from fans.
On Wednesday, an amused tweeter posted a picture of billionaire Elon sitting on a huge wrecking ball in reference to Miley’s 2013 video for her single Wrecking Ball.
The Twitter user captioned the post: “Alright Elon just…. hear me out.”
Responding favourably to the fan’s tweet, Elon said: “Might be something there haha.”
Miley also chimed in on the banter and replied: “I’m down if you are! #MileyAndMusk to the moon!”
But some of Miley’s fans didn’t really see the funny side to the friendly online exchange and asked the singer to remove her comment.
One fan tweeted: “Delete this we will pretend that we didn’t see,’ while another said, ‘Bestieeeee it’s not too late delete this.”
Another fan wrote: “Miley please you don’t have to pretend to like him,’ while another said, ‘No thanks we only want miley.”
While a third user went further and discussed Elon’s wealth: “Yes queen infiltrate and redistribute that wealth we love to see it.”
“Delete this, we will pretend we didn’t see it,” penned another fan.
Though the programme is usually hosted by musicians, comedians and actors, Tesla owner Elon is not the first businessman to appear as a host on NBC’s Saturday Night Live.
Late New York business owner George Steinbrenner hosted the show in 1990 and in 1983. Former NBC programming president Brandon Tartikoff also took the reigns as host.
The news of Elon’s appearance on SNL comes after he received criticism about his treatment towards women and his involvement in “destroying the planet and humanity”.
The online condemnation led his girlfriend, Claire Boucher who goes by the stage name Grimes to jump to the billionaire’s defence after a parody TikTok video mocked her and Elon’s relationship.
Responding to the video in the comment section Grimes said: “I try to correct the misconceptions.”
But one TikTok user was having none of it and directly called the artist out: “Grimes how are you doing this and actively sleeping with the man who literally destroys the planet and humanity.”
Grimes did not let the comment slide and responded directly: “How is he doing these things? His whole career is about making travel/house power etc sustainable and green. It’s worth a deep dive.”
