Singer Demi Lovato has announced they identify as non-binary, changing their pronouns to they/them.
In a statement released on Twitter, the chart-topper admitted the decision came after spending a lifetime “living for those on the other side of the cameras”.
Demi, 28, faced the camera as they came out as non-binary, explaining they had been doing a great deal of healing and self-reflection over the past year.
Non-binary means Demi doesn’t identify as male or female and doesn’t conform to the traditional gender norms.
The Unbroken hitmaker promised fans they will discuss their journey in their new video series, named 4D With Demi Lovato, adding they believe “that this best represents the fluidity” they feel in their “gender expression”.
They said: “Every day we wake up, we are given another opportunity and chance to be who we want and wish to be.
“I’ve spent the majority of my life growing in front of all of you… you’ve seen the good, the bad, and everything in between.
“Not only has my life been a journey for myself, I was also living for those on the other side of the cameras.
“Today is a day I’m so happy to share more of my life with you all- I am proud to let you know that I identify as non-binary & will officially be changing my pronouns to they/them moving forward.”
The singer, who rose to fame as a child star on the Disney Channel, admitted sharing the personal news had made them feel vulnerable.
Adding to the statement, Demi reached out to those on similar journeys of self-reflection, urging their fans to “live their truths”.
“This has come after a lot of healing & self-reflective work. I’m still learning & coming into myself, & I don’t claim to be an expert or a spokesperson. Sharing this with you now opens another level of vulnerability for me,” they said.
“I’m doing this for those out there that haven’t been able to share who they truly are with their loved ones. Please keep living in your truths & know I am sending so much love your way xox.”
Demi’s fans and supporters were moved by the news, happy to see the acclaimed performer come to terms with their identity.
One fan wrote: “We are proud of you Demi.”
“Proud of you!!! coming out is such a brave thing to do, ignore those people in the comments who don’t understand,” agreed another.
While a third penned: “Aaaaah I’M SO PROUD OF YOU Thank you for keep being inspirational and, above everything, yourself. It’s really lovely.”
