Lorraine Kelly's life off-air – feud, baby heartache and rarely-seen husband

Lorraine, 61, will be starring in Celebrity Gogglebox with her 26-year-old daughter Rosie, who works in PR, this week, marking her first appearance in a reality TV show.

The star has been on morning TV since the 1980s, when she started out on TV-am – and it was thanks to her job that she met her husband and Rosie’s dad, cameraman Steve Smith.

The couple got married in 1992 after meeting at work, but while Lorraine is a household name, we don’t often hear about her spouse.

While Steve generally stays out of the spotlight, Lorraine did take to Instagram to celebrate their latest wedding anniversary.

Sharing a rare picture from their big day on Instagram, Lorraine wrote, “So this happened 28 years ago! Happy anniversary to my husband Steve who makes me laugh and is always in my corner. #anniversary #love #happy.”

She also shared a picture of them out to dinner at The Ivy to celebrate the special occasion.

Lorraine spoke to Express.co.uk in 2019 to reveal the secret behind their long-lasting marriage.

“I think we make time to talk,” she said. “We like each other, and he makes me laugh. We give each other space.”

She added, “We have our own interests as well as enjoying doing things together. That keeps us interested and interesting. We respect each other.”

Lorraine and Steve share daughter Rosie, who is beginning to follow in her mum’s footsteps after studying journalism at university.

Rosie lived in Singapore for three years after graduating from Nupier University, but moved back at the start of the pandemic last year.

The duo have created their own podcast together, called What If, where they interview celebrity guests together.

Rosie recently said of the joint venture, “It doesn’t feel like work.”

Personal struggles

Lorraine recently opening up about suffering a miscarriage in 2001, four years after Rosie was born in 1994.

“It was very hard,” she admitted. “We had very much wanted another baby but it wasn’t to be.”

She also revealed how she feels she went back to work too soon after the tragic event, saying, “I wanted to go back to work to get routine back, but I went far too soon.”

Lorraine suffered more family heartache last year when her dad, John, became so ill he was fighting for his life.

“We went through a few very tough months thinking we were going to lose him. It was just awful – but he was amazing, he rallied,” she said.

“This time last year he was in hospital and got out just before Covid started. He basically has heart failure.

“He also had a really bad scare and they thought he had lung cancer but it was just a massive, massive infection.”

Just like many others, Lorraine has also had moments in her career that have left her mentally scarred.

The presenter has opened up about how covering the Dunblane massacre of 1996 still haunts her today.

Lorraine reported live on GMTV the day after Thomas Hamilton shot dead 16 children and a teacher at Dunblane Primary School.

“I just about managed to hold it together during those three and a half hours of live television but shed many tears afterwards,” she told The Sun earlier this year.

“It never really does go away and (I think about it) any time I see a sign for Dunblane or whenever there is something in America where as we know it happens far too often.

“That was the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do in my life and I don’t think there will be anything else like that.”

Famous feud

She’s always been known for her warm, bubbly persona on-screen, but Lorraine certainly doesn’t suffer fools gladly.

One famous face she’s famously clashed with is MP Esther McVey, who is a former colleague of Lorraine.

Rumours of a feud started following an episode of Good Morning Britain last year, when Piers Morgan asked Lorraine if she recalled working with Esther on GMTV in the 1990s, to which Lorraine awkwardly replied that she ‘couldn’t remember.’

She later explained the reason behind her hostility, explaining to Fabulous magazine, “She’d been quoted as saying some really terrible things, especially towards the LGBT community. I just thought: ‘Nah, you don’t do that’.”

She added: “Ann Widdecombe was the same. People shouldn’t be toxic. I just don’t get it.”
