David Baddiel and Frank Skinner reunite with The Lightning Seeds after 25 years

Football fans have been chanting ‘Three Lions’ ever since the song was first released for Euro ’96.

Now after 25 years, comedians David Baddiel and Frank Skinner are reuniting with The Lightning Seeds to perform it live.

The one-off performance will take place at London’s 229 music venue on Sunday July 11 in front of 200 England fans. It is in honour of England’s Euro 2020 final game against Italy at Wembley Stadium, the Three Lions’ first international final in 55 years.

The event will see The Lightning Seeds do a 30 minute set before being joined by Baddiel and Skinner. It’s part of a grassroots music campaign called National Lottery’s Revive Live.

David Baddiel said: “As a performer whose own stand-up tour has been furloughed since March 2020, I can’t wait to get onstage again. And doing Three Lions on the day England are in the final isn’t a bad way to restart.”

His fellow comedian Frank Skinner agreed, adding: “Football’s coming home and live music is going out again. It’s a brilliant double whammy and I guess a live Three Lions sums it up. Great times!”

The National Lottery is contributing £1M to directly underwrite the touring and production costs of over 300 live performances this summer.

It will enable the grassroots live music industry to start promoting shows again, knowing that the upfront costs associated with touring are covered.

The unlikely combo of a Liverpool rock band and two comedians produced the biggest UK football anthem of all time. Three Lions (It’s Coming Home) was originally written as the England anthem for UEFA Euro 1996.

The track was re-recorded with new lyrics for the 1998 World Cup. 20 years later it returned during the 2018 World Cup, when England made it to the semi-finals.

It has become the first song in UK history to have four spells at No 1.
