Charlie Dimmock's life – heartbreaking family loss to 'the braless one' label

Since appearing as part of the original team on much loved BBC gardening series Ground Force in 1997, Charlie Dimmock has been admired by Britain’s millions of gardeners.

Yet at school she initially planned to specialise in forensic science before changing her mind and studying horticulture.

Charlie was nicknamed ‘horticultural Viagra’ during her eight year stint on Ground Force alongside Alan Titchmarsh and Tommy Walsh. Charlie’s habit of not wearing a bra while gardening is still widely remembered.

“The TV presenter Esther Rantzen said to me, ‘You’ll be labelled the braless one for the rest of your life’,” Charlie once told The Independent.

She added: “Even now, people will bring it up. It is very silly.

“It was always just for comfort. If you’re swinging a sledgehammer, you want to be comfortable! People say, ‘Why don’t you wear a sports bra?’ But those are not the comfiest things in the world.”

After Ground Force, Charlie, 54, took a break from TV, telling the Radio Times: “People think that if you’re suddenly not on telly, you’ve stopped working.

Charlie has been working on other projects alongside her TV career

“That doesn’t happen, because we all have mortgages to pay. I had been on TV a very long time, but I had always been doing other things.”

Charlie lives a quiet life in the New Forest in Hampshire with her pet horse. She is not on social media.

Charlie is currently single and has previously expressed that she doesn’t intend to get married. In 2016 she told the Independent “even sharing a house with someone would be a no for me”.

According to the Express she has an estimated net worth of around £6.57million.

Charlie is enjoying her current gardening show

She faced tragedy in 2004 when her mother and stepdad were killed in the Boxing Day tsunami while on the island of Phuket in Thailand.

Charlie, 54, now presents the BBC’s Garden Rescue, where she competes with award winning garden designers the Rich brothers to create stunning gardens for people across the UK.

The popular show has earned her a new generation of green fingered fans.
