Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt shocked the world when they announced their decision to separate in 2016, two years after the pair tied the knot.
Now, the Tomb Raider actress, 46, has opened up like never before about their split, insisting that the decision was not made lightly.
In a new interview, Los Angeles native Angelina dropped claims about her former husband, alleging she once feared for the safety of her family.
During their marriage, Brad Pitt, 57, had been open about his battle with alcohol addiction but insists he was never abusive towards his family.
Now, Jolie has admitted that she had been left “broken” following their tough divorce.
Speaking to The Guardian magazine, the mother-of-six was asked if she feared for her children during their marriage, to which she responded: “Yes, for my family, my whole family.”
Angelina and Brad share sons Maddox, 20, and Pax, 17, adopted daughter Zahara, 16, biological daughter, Shiloh, 15, and biological twins Knox and Vivienne, 13.
Now, they are appealing for joint custody of their offspring but the process has been tough on Angelina who said: “It has been so horrific that I almost have to see it as a godsend to be in a position to be able to fight this system.”
She continued: “It took a lot for me to be in a position where I felt I had to separate from the father of my children.”
While she may be shattered from the emotional pain of the divorce, Angelina told the publication: “I just want my family to heal and I want everyone to move forward – all of us, including their dad, I want us to heal and be peaceful, we’ll always be a family.”
The former couple who were once Hollywood’s hottest couple met in 2005 while working together on the box office hit, Mr and Mrs Smith that was released in June 2005.
Just one year after Brad and former wife Jennifer Aniston announced their divorce in March 2005, Brad and Angelina confirmed their relationship, announcing that she was pregnant with their first child, Shiloh.
They went on to announce their engagement in April 2012 after dating for seven years, marrying in a private ceremony just one year later.
Two years after marrying, Angelina filed for divorce on September 19, 2016, citing irreconcilable differences.
A court order in April 2019 officially restored their relationship to single, confirming that the pair were officially divorced.
