Humiliated Antiques Road Trip host says auctioneer is 'laughing' at his failure

Antiques Road Trip expert Tim Medhurst was humiliated in front of his rival Izzie Balmer when the auctioneer laughed at his huge loss on a special item.

In Monday’s episode of the BBC show (September 6) Tim and Izzie were scouring the antique shops of Wales to uncover treasures they might transform into serious money at the auction house.

Tim’s attention was grabbed by a walking stick made out of a tough stalk of Brussels sprouts (Brassica oleracea) which, although grown for its delicious buds, is also sometimes used to make sticks.

He believed the knobbly and varnished cane might appeal to buyers with an eclectic taste.

Unfortunately, he was left humiliated and accused the auctioneer of “laughing” at him, which only made Izzie join in with laughing at him too.

Seeming confident at the start of the auction, Tim said: “You can’t have a Christmas dinner without Brussels sprouts.

“So this cane just reminds me of Christmas.”

The auctioneer started the bidding at £10 but then admitted it had “stalled” and wouldn’t go any higher.

Outraged, Tim said: “Why is he smiling? He’s laughing at me!”

The auctioneer brought the auction to an end at £10 leaving Tim with a loss of £8.

“I loved the auctioneer’s little smirk,” Izzie said as she continued to enjoy her rival’s defeat.

“He smirked because he knows that whoever had bought that was losing money,” Tim added.

This comes after an Antiques Roadshow guest was stunned by the huge value of an ornament found in a mysterious old box.

She had inherited it from her great-grandfather and only decided to open it after waiting 40 years.

It needed a screwdriver to do the job but once she was inside she saw an amazing carving her great-grandfather had crafted.

It was valued at up to £6,000 but she said she’d never part with it.
