Rapper Wiley has today appeared in court after being charged with assault and burglary – and has been given more time to get legal aid to fight the case.
The musician whose real name is Richard Kylea Cowie Jr has been accused of breaking into the home of a former kickboxer Ali Jacko before attacking the alleged victim on August 28 this year.
The performer, 42, is accused of allegedly smashing plates at a flat in Forest Gate, east London.
Cowie of New Village Avenue, Poplar, east London, faces charges of assault by beating and burglary with intent to cause criminal damage.
However, the rapper’s case has been adjourned by two weeks to allow him to apply for legal aid and instruct lawyers.
District judge Ross Johnson granted his request for an adjournment and gave him conditional bail ahead of the next hearing at the same court on September 27.
It’s believed that the Wearing My Rolex hitmaker – known as the Godfather of Grime – had used Ali’s private recording studio before the pandemic sent the world into a global lockdown last year.
Arriving at Thames Magistrates’ Court, the musician walked in wearing his headphones.
He wore a black Nike sweatshirt with matching white joggers as he entered the building.
In a statement following the incident, a spokesperson for The Met said: “At around 2200hrs on Saturday 28 August police were called to a flat in Forest Gate.
“Officers attended the location, it was alleged that a man had entered the flat, assaulted the occupant and caused criminal damage to property.”
They added: “The man was arrested and taken into custody. The occupant, an adult male, sustained a minor injury. London ambulance service were not required.”
Wiley was honoured with an MBE in 2018 through the Queen’s New Years Honours for services to music.
The musician is said to be one of the leading forces behind grime music in the UK, paving the way for new artists after racking up a solo No1 single and two No1 with the hit group, Roll Deep.
While he announced his retirement from game music in June 2020, he has still continued to work on music.
