Sky News awkward subtitle blunder says Sir Keir Starmer ‘got pink eye’

Sky News made a pretty awkward subtitle blunder on Wednesday afternoon when it diagnosed Keir Starmer with “pink eye”.

The Labour leader took to the podium on the last day of proceedings at his party’s annual conference in Brighton, appearing in a speaking capacity for the first time in-person.

His lengthy monologue almost breached the 90-minute mark and spanned over 7,000 words, with Sky News streaming live coverage of the event on its YouTube channel.

Subtitles were available for viewers watching the livestream, leading to the amusing incident.

During the broadcast, a mistake in the captioning of the event led the screen to read that Keir said he “declared the matter closed when I got pink eye”.
