Maureen Nolan hails her 'Chemo Sisters' as 'inspirational' in cancer battle update

Maureen Nolan has hailed her two sisters Linda and Anne as “inspirational” in their fights against cancer.

In recent times, Maureen, 67, bravely stepped up to help out her sibling Linda who could no longer appear in the comical play Girls Just Wanna Have Fun.

Prior to the Covid-19 pandemic, Linda had signed up to appear in the 2020 production which faced a number of setbacks due to lockdown restrictions in the UK.

During that period, Linda received heartbreaking news that her secondary breast cancer had spread to her liver and was now incurable.

At the time, their sister Anne, 70, had also been battling breast cancer for the second time – with the twosome calling themselves the “Chemo Sisters” as they fought the disease together.

Fortunately, Anne has now received the “all clear” again but sadly the same can’t be said for Linda who is taking each day bravely as it comes.

Updating on Linda’s health battle, Maureen told Daily Star: “It’s an ongoing battle really with Linda but she’s doing really well.

“She’s always strong and always positive and helpful. She’s amazing and is just an inspiration to a lot of people. So is Anne.”

Maureen added: “We get a lot of mail or she [Linda] gets a lot of mail from women saying ‘if you can carry on, I can’ and just really nice letters from people.

Maureen explained that Linda is doing well in spite of the news her breast cancer is now not curable

“So yeah, she’s brilliant and doing ok at the moment.”

At the beginning of the year, Linda, 61, took to Twitter to show off her fabulous platinum blonde short trimmed locks.

Looking as glamorous as ever, she stunned as she debuted her new transformation but according to Maureen, cutting her hair wasn’t a choice she made lightly.

Maureen explained: “She was traumatised by having to cut her hair and shave her head after her last chemo but I think it’s really grown on her now – pardon the pun – but she does like herself now.

“She’s really chic and she always looks well groomed when she goes out, as does Anne – I love her new short hair too.”

The entire family have been struck a number of times and know all too well how devastating cancer can be after their sister Bernie Nolan sadly lost her battle with disease in 2013 at the age of 52.

In spite of all the hardship, pain and grief that they have suffered as a unit their positivity as a family doesn’t go unnoticed by all who know and love them.

Speaking about their strength and copying mechanisms, Maureen explained there had been days where she had “crumbled” for her sisters.

She said: “Well as long as Linda and Anne can be positive, which is especially sad because of Linda’s ongoing treatment, we can all be positive.

Maureen has had days where she has “crumbled” when it has all became to much for her but faces each day with a positive outlook for her sisters

“In private maybe you do crumble a little bit I suppose we never let her see and she never lets us see – I’m sure she has moments too.

“But I think as they say, you’ve really only got two choices. You can choose to give up or just get on with it.

“So both of them and Bernie as well, they just chose to get on with it.”

Maureen has certainly been keeping busy as she readies for the festive period and takes on the role as the Wicked Witch in the Snow White pantomine – a must-see adventure at the Stafford Gatehouse Theatre.

The singer – who was supported by her four sisters Linda, Coleen, Denise and Bernie in the chart topping band in the 80s – wasn’t keen on playing the terrifying role in the production at first.

She joked: “I didn’t know if I’d like to be the one frightening the kids or unpopular with the kids but actually I do like it.

“If there’s not a child running out of the theatre in two minutes then my jobs not done.”
