Heather Small explained she had to “deconstruct” her voice during The Masked Singer UK.
The iconic singer who disguised herself as Chandelier was evicted from the show during episode one revealed that she didn’t take it to heart as she didn’t see it as a singing competition.
Speaking to Daily Star exclusively at The National Diversity Awards in Liverpool, she said: “They’ve got a great vocal coach, who sort of deconstructed my voice.
“What I did was, I sing with an oval voice, so I sang with my voice horizontal, I tried to use more of a head voice rather than my chest. I kind of chose songs that people wouldn’t associate me with and they were so successful in not guessing me.
“I was out in the first week, it was alright, it made good TV because they were so surprised, nobody guessed, it went really well.”
She added: “It’s not a singing competition, it’s a guessing game, if it was a singing competition and I got voted out in the first week, I’d have had something to say about it but it was fun, nobody guessed me.
“My mother was watching at home with my sister, my mother lives with me so my mother was on the sofa and said ‘I know that voice’.
“About two weeks before it aired my mum said ‘Did you do a TV show and you couldn’t talk about it?’ we call her the bloodhound, she sniffed it out.”
The Proud songstress told us that she had initially turned down several offers from ITV producers in the past but believed the time was right following the “difficult” years around the pandemic.
She explained: “I’d been asked before and I said no as I wouldn’t be able to disguise my voice so what’s the point, I thought after the couple of years that we’ve had, I thought something fun was in order.
“It’s light entertainment you can do with your children and grandchildren, so I thought I’d do it, it’s fun and Joss Stone and Gabrielle said it was so much fun, so I thought I’ll try it.”
Judges Rita Ora, Jonathan Ross, Mo Gilligan and Davina McCall struggled to guess that Heather was the voice behind Chandelier.
The Movin’ On Up star explained that she chose her costume as she “liked shiny”, adding: “I liked the way the lights came on.”
The Masked Singer continues Saturday and Sunday on ITV at 7pm
