Antiques Roadshow fans disgusted as historic glass expert drinks urine on-air

Antiques Roadshow fans were left sickened on Sunday night (February 6) as they realised that one antique glass expert was sipping urine on-air.

Andy McConnell had been presented with a bottle dating back to the 1800s on the show, and was astonished to discover that it still contained some of its original liquid.

He withdrew some of the liquid with a syringe, emptied it into a glass and nonchalantly dipped his finger in the beverage to give it a taste, before declaring it to be “port or red wine”.

Andy then joked: “Unless it’s got a load of rusty nails in and I’m just drinking rust!”

But the real verdict was even darker, as host Fiona Bruce explained that it wasn’t wine in the bottle at all – but instead a mixture of human hair, urine and rusty metal tacks.

She explained to him: “You decided you’d have a go at tasting the contents…”

“It was too good an opportunity to miss!” Andy insisted, as Fiona continued to tell him that the contents had been X-rayed.

“Now you thought it was port or wine,” she said as they giggled. “That would have been nice! In actual fact, inside were these brass pins, all of these dating from the late 1840s. Then the liquid… urine!”

“Yummy – such good news!” Andy chimed in.

Fiona wasn’t finished yet, as she added: “A tiny bit of alcohol, and one human hair. And a mysterious little creature called an ostropod – which is like a little cockle.

“So what this was was not a bottle of port or wine, but a witch’s bottle. So buried in the threshold of the house as a talisman against witchcraft and curses.”

She asked Andy: “Are you glad you tried it now?”

Reflecting on the incident, which happened in an earlier episode before Fiona and Andy reunited for a ‘what happened next’ segment, he explained: “Well years later people stop me on the street and ask, ‘Are you all right because you drank that nasty stuff on the show!'”

Fiona joked with the bottle’s owner: “It might be delicious.”

“Well, a 100-year-old bottle of port – it might be worth something,” he agreed, while Fiona said: “Well you got a 100-year-old bottle of wee instead.”

Fans, however, were less than impressed by the events transpiring on-screen, as one tweeted in response: “The look on Glassman’s mush when Fiona told him the contents of that witch’s bottle was priceless.”

Another included a GIF of someone being sick as they captioned it: “Glassman using the bogs shortly after his wine tasting!!”

As someone else cheekily joked: “What Happened Next? An arrest, court case, charged with deception and sentenced!”

“And that is how COVID-19 or AIDS started!” a fourth social media user echoed.
