Joanna Scanlan breaks down in tears after nabbing Leading Actress BAFTA from Lady Gaga

Joanna Scanlan was incredibly emotional following her first ever BAFTA win tonight – the same award that Lady Gaga was the favourite to win.

The Welsh actress and screenwriter who is best-known for her roles in The Thick of It, Getting On, Puppy Love, and No Offence, won the Best Leading Actress gong at the awards ceremony.

The 60-year-old portrayed Mary Hussain in After Love, a widow who discovers her late husband’s secret family.

After her incredible win, we caught up with the star on the red carpet and asked her how she was feeling after nabbing the award and pipping Lady Gaga to the post, to which she responded with: “To be perfectly honest I feel shaky.

“Life is yet to catch up with me, I’m a little behind the beat.”

Joanna, who has been nominated at BAFTA on three separate occasions opened up to us about how it felt to finally win an award.

Breaking down and crying, the emotional actress said: “To be honoured by BAFTA in film for a Leading Actress is the highest accolade I could ever aspire to.

“It makes me think of all of those who have been before me and those I work with every day and how much I feel the honour of being an actor.

“It is a very special but very secretive world. I just never imagined that I would have received this honour, genuinely.”

Lady Gaga narrowly missed out on the coveted Best Leading Actress gong – an award she was nominated for after portraying Patrizia Reggiani in the hit Hollywood movie, House Of Gucci.

Joanna opened up to Daily Star in the aftermath of accepting her award

At the time of getting nominated she said it was “an absolute dream come true” to be nominated for her second leading actress BAFTA gong.

She added that she still has “a long way to go in the space of film making” though.

On the red carpet before the star-studded ceremony took place in the Royal Albert Hall, Lady Gaga’s House Of Gucci co-star Salma Hayek said: “I hope Gaga wins tonight. I’m sorry, I’m biased but I want Gaga to win tonight.”
