Naga Munchetty appalled as Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe trolls brand her 'ungrateful c***'

BBC Breakfast’s Naga Munchetty took to Twitter to share her disappointment over the recent online abuse towards Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe, following her comments about the UK Foreign Office.

The 44-year-old was finally released after she spent the last six years detained in Iran under false spying charges and her comments upon release have sparked backlash.

She spoke at a press conference: “I have seen five foreign secretaries change over the course of six years, that is unprecedented. I was told many times: ‘We’re going to get you home,’ and that never really happened”

She continued: “How many foreign secretaries does it take to get someone home? Five. What happened now should have happened six years ago.”

Many have deemed her critical comments as controversial and after the press conference was broadcasted, public outcry ensued.

Social media platform Twitter exploded with abuse towards the false-detainee and “ungrateful cow” began trending.

Twitter users thought that she should have shown more gratitude for her release, rather than anger that her freedom took so long to obtain.

Upon Nazanin’s capture, her daughter was just one year old and throughout her detainment she has seen a turnover of five foreign secretaries.

47-year-old Naga took to Twitter to share her own shock at the response towards Nazanin’s statement.

The reporter was shocked at the abuse

In disbelief, she shared a snapshot of the Twitter trending page and circled the hashtag “ungrateful cow,” which was the top trending topic.

She wrote: “Wow,” in the caption, a sure sign at her bafflement over the insult.

Some of her 267,000 followers replied to her tweet, equally appalled at the abuse.

One said: “My god, this makes me [angry]. This is exactly why I watched the whole one hour interview. Nazanin, what a woman after all she has been through. I thought she was so strong and brave.”

Another tweeted out: “Absolutely revolted at the hostility she is receiving. She should have been free six years and five foreign secretaries ago.”

In retaliation to the uproar, former foreign secretary Jeremy Hunt, who held the role from 2018 to 2019, tweeted out a message.

He wrote: “Those criticising Nazanin have got it so wrong. She doesn’t owe us gratitude: we owe her an explanation. I tried my best, as did other foreign secretaries, but if trying our best took six years then we must be honest and say the problem should have been solved earlier. Ministerial turnover may have been a factor.”
