Russell T Davis brought the show back in 2005 and has returned as the next showrunner. His first episode of Doctor Who was titled Rose.

Speaking on having Yasmin star in the 60th anniversary programme, Russell said was “an absolute joy” to have her join the next line up of talent for the show. He also discussed how reprising the role of Rose would work, saying: “Life on Doctor Who gets brighter and wilder, how can there be another Rose?”

“You’ll find out in 2023, but it’s an absolute joy to welcome Yasmin to the Doctor Who set. We all fell in love with her in Heartstopper, one of those shows which changes the world – and now Yasmin can change the Whoniverse!”

She is not the first trans actress to play the Time Lord’s companion, as Rebecca Root played the first transgender companion, Tania Bell.

Yasmin said: “If anyone would have told eight-year-old Yasmin that one day she’d be part of this iconic show, I would have never in a million years believed them.

“This show has a place in so many people’s hearts, so to be seen as a trans actress by the legend himself Russell, has not only made my year, it’s made my life.”

She went on to say: “I cannot wait to begin this journey and for you all to see how Rose blossoms. Get Ready.”

Yasmin is originally from Manchester, and lives with her mum, who raised her. She has always been a keen actress, and became popular on TikTok, for speaking on her experiences as a black, British trans teenager.
