Paul O'Grady admits he wasn't 'happy' as he breaks silence over BBC Radio 2 exit

Paul O’Grady has admitted that he quit his BBC Radio 2 show because he “wasn’t really happy”.

The 67-year-old national treasure has taken to the air on BBC Radio 2 for the final time today (August 14) – but updated fans with a quick video on social media beforehand.

He announced his shock departure earlier this week, with speculation around the reasoning behind his exit swirling – but now he has broken his silence.

Chatting in a video on his page, Paul began: “Can you hear those dogs barking, honestly, I can’t do anything,” hinting at his everlasting love for dogs and animals.

He then said: “I just want to say that tonight is my very last show on Radio 2 after 14 years! I have never had a job for that long.

“So I want to say thank you very much for listening and for all your emails and all your messages and all the fun I’ve had over the years.

“And also a huge special mention to Malcolm Prince, my producer. And I’ve been really lucky in my time to have worked with some smashing producers, and Malcolm is way up there, believe you and me.”

Addressing the reasoning behind his exit, Paul then revealed: “And the reason I’m leaving because everybody’s asked me this. It’s because I wasn’t really happy with the 13 weeks on/13 weeks off business.”

He added: “So, I did the honourable thing and I honoured my contract, gave my notice and now I’m off.

“Anyway, thanks very much and good luck to everyone on Radio 2 and long may you continue!”

Fans and friends were quick to flock to the comments section, with pal Carol Vorderman penning: “Love you so much Paul. Don’t even think about retiring…. There’s only one of you.”

One fan penned: “Thank you for all the fun and laughter over the years you’ll both be sorely missed.”

While another added: “Going to really miss you Paul. Sundays are not going to be the same. No one can replace you. Good luck with whatever your new adventure may be.”

And a third said: “You are irreplaceable, absolutely gutted your going , a real legend lost xxxxxxxx.”

This comes after Paul shared a statement on Tuesday, August 9 which read: “I’ve loved doing my Sunday afternoon show for the last 14 years and I’m going to miss my listeners as well as the fun I’ve had with my producer Malcolm Prince, but I feel that now is the right time to go.”
