Coronation Street villain Stephen Reid plans to add his name to the long roster of serial killers haunting the cobbles, after antagonist Pat Phelan’s reign ended in 2018.
Soap viewers saw Stephen grapple with Jenny’s beau Leo, who came close to discovering his defrauding schemes, before ultimately killing him and driving away without informing the authorities.
Stephen manages to dispose of the body and begins an elaborate set-up to ensure everyone thinks Leo has emigrated to Canada – but actor Todd Boyce has teased that this won’t be his last kill.

Explaining what’s to come in the soap, Todd explained: “Stephen goes back to the scene of the crime at the back of Underworld, and he sees Leo’s phone, which they were scuffling over and had been forgotten about on the ground.
“He manages to make it seem like Leo is in Canada, sneaks into the pub because he overhears from Gemma that his suitcase and passport are in the back room.”
He added: “It’s so creepy because it’s exactly how I would steal something, so you really are exposing yourself as a thief and a bad guy!”
And as for Leo: “Everyone thinks his passport and suitcase are gone and he’s sending text messages saying everything’s great in Canada, so it’s perfect cover.”
But amid his treachery, does Stephen feel any guilt?
Todd spilled: “Probably like everyone in the world, I’ve spent my life thinking the worst thing you could possibly do is be the reason for someone dying.
“We were filming a scene the other day with police cars outside Underworld and Carla calling Stephen over, and he’s thinking, ‘Oh my God…’
“He started to cry, because that’s natural and he’s so alone with his secrets. I think he definitely feels guilt – he’s not a killer, he just happens to have killed someone.”

But that might not last for long, as it seems Stephen could get over that guilt pretty quickly.
Todd continued: “It’s really interesting, I’m not sure that he [will be able to cope with killing], and I’ve thought about it.
“Someone was joking in the green room the other day – another actor’s character had killed someone and they said, ‘Once you do one, you kind of get a taste for it.’
“I think it might get easier, and he’ll be able to cope with it. But at this point because I’m just taking this journey, I’m just going to go as I would play it and see how toughened he gets.
“I think he’s capable of just killing more people and going on and doing that. It’s like a gambler – the further he’s in, the further he digs the hole.”
The star also teased that his fellow actors are worried about losing their jobs if Stephen decides to kill off their characters – but as to who is next on his radar, fans will have to wait and see.
Coronation Street airs Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 8pm on ITV.
