Sesame Street star Bob McGrath dies aged 90 as tributes pour in for legendary actor

Sesame Street actor Bob McGrath died at 90 on Sunday (December 4) as tributes pour in for the legendary actor.

The actor’s family confirmed the devastating news on Facebook, where they shared: “Hello, Facebook friends. Our father, Bob McGrath, passed away today. He died peacefully at home, surrounded by his family.”

Bob was one of the original and longest-standing human stars of Sesame Street, where he appeared on the show from 1969-2017.

The legendary actor starred in 460 episodes throughout 47 seasons and also served as an educator and musician.

He performed many of the show’s original songs, including People in Your Neighborhood, Sing a Song and if You’re Happy and You Know It.

Bob was also one of the voices behind Sesame Steet’s extremely popular theme song, Can You Tell Me How to Get to Sesame Street?

The actor also appeared in many Sesame Street productions, including standalone films, sing-alongs, and holiday specials.

These include The Adventures of Elmo in Grouchland, Follow That Bird, Christmas Eve on Sesame Street, Big Bird’s Story Time, Sesame Street’s 50th Anniversary Celebration, Sesame Street: Friends to the Rescue and many more.

Despite stepping away from in front of the camera in 2017, Bob continued to work behind the scenes with the show’s workshops.

He was one of the series’s longest-standing human adult cast members and is survived by his wife, Ann, and their three kids, plus five grandchildren.

Sesame Street fans and Bob’s followers have since taken to social media to share their heartfelt condolences following the announcement.

“Rest in Peace, Bob McGrath. Thank you for being a person in our neighbourhood,” read one tribute.

Another fan penned: “Bob McGrath, one of the nicest people in the Sesame Street neighbourhood, has died. He was one of the original four non-Muppet cast members that we met each day when the show started in 1969, and he will be sadly missed.”

“Another Sesame Street grownup who we grew up with has passed on to that big neighbourhood in the sky where sunny days keep the clouds away,” wrote another heartbroken fan.
