Mariah Carey didn't imagine All I Want For Christmas hit would achieve global success

Mariah Carey “never imagined” her classic Christmas track would be a huge success.

Her iconic All I Want for Christmas Is You has proved increasingly popular over the past decades.

The superstar singer first recorded the song for her first festive album, Merry Christmas, in 1994.

Speaking about the track during an interview for W magazine, Mariah talked about how she first came up with the initial sounds for the song.

Mariah said: “I had a keyboard, and, no, I am by no means a piano player, but I can pluck out chords when I need to.

“I didn’t want it to feel specific to any era, so we didn’t use sounds that were happening at that time.

“That way, it would feel classic and timeless. But I could never have imagined that it would become such a major part of my life.”

However, she also revealed how she wondered whether it was too early in her career to release a Christmas album.

Mariah, 52, continued: “Okay, so the idea of me doing a Christmas album at all came from the record company. It was very early in my career, and I thought it was a little early for me to be doing that, but I was like, ‘Well, I love Christmas.’ I had some very sad Christmases as a child, but I always try to find the bright light there.”

This comes after she has been slammed by her All I Want For Christmas Is You co-writer.

According to co-writer Walter Afanasieff, Mariah has taken all the credit for the writing of the track.

Speaking on the Hot Takes & Deep Dives podcast, record producer Walter, 64, said: “When she started to hint at the fact that, ‘Oh, I wrote that song when I was a little girl!’

“But why weren’t you saying that for 12 or 13 or 15 years prior to that?

“So, it just sort of developed in her mind.”

“We were both on the same page about how we wrote All I Want For Christmas Is You. There was never any alternate story until probably 10 years ago.”

He continued: “She doesn’t know chord changes and music theory or anything like that. She doesn’t know a diminished chord from a minor seventh chord to a major seventh chord.

“So, to claim that she wrote a very complicated chord-structured song with her finger on a Casio keyboard when she was a little girl, it’s kind of a tall tale.”
