Vivienne had received an OBE from the Queen in 1992 and went to collect her title from Buckingham Palace, but she turned up to the ceremony without any underwear.
She decided to celebrate her royal title by twirling around a courtyard outside Buckingham Palace in front of a crowd of paparazzi.
The style rebel, who famously brought punk into the mainstream, turned up in a grey skirt suit with black platform heels.
But she didn’t expect the photographers to be positioned so low down, so they caught her flashing more flesh than she intended.
Dame Vivienne told The Guardian: “I wished to show off my outfit by twirling the skirt. It did not occur to me that, as the photographers were practically on their knees, the result would be more glamorous than I expected.”
She then revealed she’d heard that the Queen herself had found the photo amusing, adding: “I heard that the picture amused the Queen.”
The designer later received a Damehood in 2006 for her services to fashion, this time wearing a black polka dot draped dress with a cape and beret.
Her loved ones shared an emotional statement to confirm her passing which read: “29th December 2022. Vivienne Westwood died today, peacefully and surrounded by her family, in Clapham, South London.
“The world needs people like Vivienne to make a change for the better.”
They also shared a snap of the artist in her prime alongside a meaningful quote from the fashion designer.
