Grammy winner and director of Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody Bruce Gowers dies aged 82

Music director and producer Bruce Gowers has died at the age of 82.

The Emmy award-winning director passed away on Sunday (January 15) in his Santa Monica, California, home after suffering from an acute respiratory infection, his family members revealed.

Bruce was most famed for directing Queen’s original music video for Bohemian Rhapsody and was presented with his own MTV Award for his work on the hit song.

He was also known for his role as director of American Idol: The Search for a Superstar.

Bruce’s Grammy win came in 1986 for his role on the music video for Huey Lewis and the News’ hit Heart of Rock and Roll.

The director was industry renowned, and his other projects include directing and co-creating the long-running series of Kidsongs sing-along videos for Warner Bros.

Bruce was also a specialist in live events and TV specials and helped produce a variety of award shows like The Emmys, the Billboard Music Awards, MTV’s Music Video and Movie Awards, the ESPYs and the People’s Choice Awards.

During the noughties between 2002 and 2011, Bruce directed more than 200 episodes of American Idol throughout eight seasons.

Bruce’s work on the American singing show earned him five Grammy nominations and one win for outstanding directing on a variety, music or comedy series in 2009.

He was previously nominated for the same Emmy award in 1998 for his work on the TV special Fleetwood Mac: The Dance in 1997.

And in 1985, Bruce also shared a nomination with the editors of The Fifth International Guinness Book of World Records for outstanding videotape editing for a limited series or a special.

During his plight to stardom, he directed multiple comedy specials working with the industry’s best talents, including Richard Lewis, Jerry Seinfeld, Robin Williams, and Eddie Murphy.

The director also had a number of hit music specials under his belt, working with the likes of Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears.
