Law & Order star Richard Belzer dies aged 78 as tributes pour in for actor

Law & Order actor Richard Belzer has died aged 78, with a close friend of the star revealing his X-rated last words.

The beloved comedian and actor, who was best known playing Detective John Munch in the Law & Order franchise, died on Sunday, February 19.

Richard passes away at his home in Bozouls in southwest France, with his longtime friend confirming the sad news.

Writer Bill Scheft, Richard’s pal, confirmed the sad news to The Hollywood Reporter, with him even giving fans a glimpse at his final moments.

Speaking to the publication, Bill noted how Richard “had lots of health issues” while confirming his passing before revealing his final words.

He said: “His last words were, ‘F**k you, motherfucker.”

The cause of Richard’s death has not yet been announced.

With tributes flooding in for the American actor, his former Saturday Night Live co-star Laraine Newman took to Twitter to share her sadness.

Taking to Twitter she penned: “I’m so sad to hear of Richard Belzer’s passing.

“I loved this guy so much. He was one of my first friends when I got to New York to do SNL. We used to go out to dinner every week at Sheepshead Bay for lobster.

“One of the funniest people ever. A master at crowd work. RIP dearest,” she concluded.

Richard made his film debut in The Groove Tube in 1974, before seguing to television when he was an audience warm-up comedian on Saturday Night Live.

His Law & Order career began in 1993 when he took on the iconic role of Detective John Munch in Homicide, before reprising the role in Law & Order from 1996 until 2000.

He then reprised the role again for the Special Victims Unit spin-off, for a whopping 325 episodes until 2016.

Although his character announced his retirement from the NYPD in 2014, he did in-fact return a couple of years later for an episode.
