The Script guitarist Mark Sheehan, 46, dies after sudden illness as band pay tribute

The Script guitarist Mark Sheehan has died at the age of 46 following a brief illness.

The musician’s death was announced by the Irish rock band on Friday (April 14) as they took to Instagram with a statement.

Sharing a photo of Mark, the message read: “Much loved husband, father, brother, band mate and friend Mark Sheehan passed away today in hospital after a brief illness.

They signed off the post by saying: “The family and group ask fans to respect their privacy at this tragic time.”

Before joining The Script, Mark was a member of the band Mytown alongside bandmate Danny O’Donoghue until 2001.

The Script were formed that same year, with Mark and vocalist Danny the group’s founding members.

Joined by drummer Glen Power, the trio released their self-titled album in 2008 which peaked at number one in both the UK and Ireland.

Last year, the singer-songwriter was notably missing from the America leg of the band’s greatest hits tour.

Speaking to the Sunday World in May 2022, Danny, 42, revealed his bandmate had missed the shows due to family commitments.

He told the publication: “It’s his story to tell, but yeah, I guess if I could paraphrase, his children needed a father and his wife needed a husband.”

“He’s been the engine of The Script for such a long time, [I told him] that ‘if you want to take a bit of time out for your family you are more than welcome to, and I insist on you going and doing it’.

“He took a little bit of time off. You get refreshed, then you come back with a new zest for life. And I believe it was the best thing that could have happened for all of us.”

The Script were due to support P!nk on her upcoming European tour starting in June and were also set to perform as Take That’s supporting act in July.

Fans were devastated at the news of the Irish singer’s passing and immediately paid tribute.

One heartbroken fan wrote: “‪I don’t know what to say other than this is breaking my heart in 100000 pieces. Many many many hugs and loves to families and friends. Shaking while typing this. Rest in peace legend.”

“Shocked and saddened. Mark was always so lovely and encouraging to us. Our thoughts are with all the Script family. RIP,” added a second person.

Another shared: “I’m speechless right now. My thoughts are with you guys and his family and may he rest in peace.”

Mark leaves behind wife of 21 years Reena Sheehan and their three children.
