Kim Seo-yeon loses her phone while travelling to visit her estranged mother and when she arrives at her childhood home she finds an old cordless phone, but is shocked when she receives a call from a woman who says she’s being tortured.
She investigates the caller and finds that the woman, Oh Young-sook, is living in the same house but twenty years earlier.
Some fans are just discovering the film now and can’t believe the “sickening” nature of the film.
Taking to Twitter, one user wrote: “The Call on Netflix is crazy as hell. I may have to rewatch that because wtf.”
Another said: “The Call on Netflix was so crazy but dope.”
A third wrote: “If you haven’t seen #TheCall on #Netflix then you’re missing out on a phenomenal movie. You are also missing Jeon Jong-seo’s outstandingly disturbing performance.’
While a fourth added: “Alright this movie was scary af and now i am gonna be having nightmares because of her…. #TheCall.'”
Elsewhere, another fan described it as: “Terrific fun, with plenty of wickedness and gory surprises, all topped off by a captivating turn from Jong-seo Jun, The Call is well worth answering.”
It was also described as a psychological horror which has absolutely won over audiences worldwide – though the Covid-19 pandemic put a stump in its plans for a large release.
The Korean release date was postponed and the film was instead released on Netflix and was immediately picked up by viewers.
The movie has landed five wins at awards shows after 12 nominations.
