Host Charle began by telling her: “I love the outfit.”
“Why thank you, I dress like this for breakfast every day.
“I’m just trying to be sexy for breakfast.”
The pair then moved on to chatting about her new album which is portraying a “slightly different” her.
Dolly explained: I’ve made my career and made history being a country artist writing country songs, singing my own songs along with duets, but mainly all country. We did have a few crossover songs like Here You Come Again and some of those songs.
“But my husband is a rock’n’roll freak. So I always thought, well, maybe I’ll do a rock album. Here I am 77 years old, a rock star.”
Charlie then interjected: “I’ve heard some of the songs and your voice, it sort of works in almost all the songs. It’s like Prince’s Purple Rain.”
However, Dolly didn’t seem to like that comment and bit back: “What do you mean in almost?”
Panicking a little, Charlie tried to save face and replied: “No, I’ll rephrase that. It does work in all these songs. I was thinking of Prince’s Purple Rain, Dolly Parton… How’s that going to be? And it’s brilliant.”
She gushed: “Well, thank you. That’s always been a favourite song of mine. I always wanted to reason to sing it because some songs you love, just don’t necessarily fit in that country music format.
“And so when I had the opportunity, that was one of my first thoughts I’m gonna get to sing Purple Rain.”
