Kate Beckinsale’s love life – toyboy flings, bitter divorce and ex’s warning to new man

For London-born model and actress Kate Beckinsale, it’s easy to assume romance comes easy.

But the Van Helsing star has battled through a bitter divorce, carried out an affair and hit the headlines plenty of times when it comes to her high-profile beaus.

From a fling with Kim Kardashian’s ex Pete Davidson to a romance with Good Omens actor Michael Sheen, there’s not much uncharted territory left for Kate.

Earlier in 2023 she was linked with actor Matt Atwater as the pair stepped out together in New York City and they took on the Big Apple.

Daily Star takes a look at Kate’s love life – from the highs of marriage to the lows of divorce proceedings.

Michael Sheen romance

In 1995, Kate was first linked to actor Michael Sheen, who she dated until 2003 – though they never went as far as tying the knot.

They met while both starring in a touring production of The Seagull, and went on to voice an audiobook of Romeo and Juliet together.

The pair did welcome a daughter together, now 24-year-old Lily Sheen.

Despite their eventual split, Kate and Michael remained friends, with Kate confessing: “I think the thing is, if you both really put your kid’s well-being first and share a sense of humour, you’re sort of halfway there.”

Marriage and divorce

Things began to go downhill for Kate and Michael on the set of 2003 film Underworld, in which they starred together.

While on-set, Kate started to fall for American director Len Wiseman – who was already married to a school teacher named Dana.

Dana claimed the pair had an affair in Budapest, and later divorced Len, leaving Kate to marry him a year later in 2004.

However, Kate denied the rumours in 2012, saying: “The popular notion of how Michael and I broke up — that we were on [the first Underworld] and I ran off with the director [Wiseman] — is just not true.

“If that were the case, I think it would be very difficult and peculiar to have an OK situation.

But by 2016, the pair decided to divorce, with a source telling Us Weekly: “They tried to make it work, but they end up falling back into old habits and fighting.”

Their divorce was finalised in 2019, and Kate deeded a Hollywood Hills property to Len after he cited “irreconcilable differences” in their relationship.

Famous flings

After her high-profile divorce, Kate went on to enjoy a series of flings, including dating 21-year-old comedian Matt Rife in 2017.

In 2019, she was linked to Saturday Night Live star Pete Davidson for four months – but Matt had a dire warning for the comedy star.

“Man to man?” he told TMZ. “Run!” – but told Pete to “enjoy it while you can”.

When writer Kristen Mulrooney tweeted: “I love how every time Pete Davidson starts dating another beautiful celebrity everyone’s like ‘wtf is happening how did he do this what is this mystery???’ and everybody refuses to entertain the possibility that he might have a nice personality,” Kate liked the tweet, indicating her agreement.

In 2018, Kate was linked to British comedy star Jack Whitehall, as the pair packed on the PDA in a Los Angeles nightclub.

They headed back to a very posh hotel together, with an eyewitness telling The Sun: “They were like a pair of loved-up teenagers and weren’t trying to hide their feelings, they were practically sitting on top of each other in the booth of the nightclub and were laughing with each other.”

In 2020, Kate was loved up with musician Goody Grace.

But their romance sadly only lasted a few months, after trolls hit out at their age-gap relationship.

Goody was just 25 when they started dating, while Kate was 47.

One troll asked: “Why do you keep dating guys that could be your children?”, to which Kate clapped back: “Every relationship I have had has been solely to annoy you.”

Another troll referred to Goody as Kate’s “tom boy”, meaning “toy boy”, in a since deleted comment, and Kate – in another since deleted post – fumed: “Try and see if you can spell and not just goon yourself straight out the gate.”

Now Kate is enjoying a romance with Matt Atwater – and thankfully things seem to be going a lot smoother this time.
