Anton Du Beke confirmed his mum “isn’t well” as he opened up about his family on Wednesday (August 2).
The Strictly Come Dancing star, 57, appeared on the latest episode of Life Stories with Kate Garraway and discussed key moments in his life, from his struggles growing up on a council estate to winning a National Television Award for Best TV Judge.
He also spoke about his close bond with his mother, Ascensión, who always supported his dreams of becoming a professional dancer while his father did the opposite.
Addressing Anton’s mother’s absence in the studio, the Good Morning Britain presenter said: “Your mum hasn’t been particularly well or she might have been here tonight,” before he detailed how she has always been there for him.
Explaining how his mother supported him financially when he was a teenager, Anton said: “She funded everything. I had nothing. I left school – I didn’t take a single exam.
“No academic qualifications whatsoever. The mantra in our house was get a job and work. Mum would prop me up financially, I’d turn up with a cheque for my lesson.”
Later in the episode, Anton got emotional as he confirmed his mother is currently unwell.
Fighting back the tears, Anton told Kate: “Because she’s not been well and she’s amazing and it makes me sad.
“What we were talking about earlier, you want people to have the best life and she’s not been well and I hope that she’s had a great time certainly since I started doing Strictly.”
He went on to reveal that his mum found love again with a man named Pete, who Anton revealed is “not much older” than himself.
“My mum, she’s a right cougar,” Anton laughed.
Earlier in the episode, Anton revealed he was stabbed in the leg and stomach by his father, who battled with alcoholism.
The stabbing, which the professional dancer revealed he’s never spoken about before, took place on boxing day and landed Anton in hospital for three days.
