Chris Rock ‘went to therapy’ to deal with ‘humiliating’ Will Smith Oscars slap

Chris Rock has confessed that he has had to go into therapy in the wake of the awkward run-in with Will Smith at the Oscars.

Rock, 58, was hosting the 2022 edition of the Academy Awards in March when he made a joke at the expense of Will’s wife Jada Pinkett-Smith.

After the joke was made, Will came on stage and slapped the Madagascar star, leaving the audience in a state of shock.

As he tried to continue with the awards show, Will continued to berate Chris, audibly shouting from his table: “Keep my wife’s name out your f***ing mouth!”.

Now, some eighteen months after the debacle on live television, a close friend of Chris revealed how the incident affected him.

Comedian and film star Leslie Jones, 56, admitted in an interview with People magazine that Chris was so ‘humiliated’ by the slap that he went into therapy with his daughters.

Speaking to the magazine, the Ghostbusters star said: “That s**t was humiliating. It really affected him. People need to understand his daughters, his parents, saw that. He had to go to counselling with his daughters”.

Whilst Jones was not at the ceremony in the Dolby Theatre when the slap happened, but she felt “infuriated” at the assault that she wanted to go there.

“You don’t know that I was going to jump in my car and roll up there. I was so f***ing mad on so many levels,” she added.

Leslie and Chris are close friends, having first met each other in the mid 1990s.

Since then, the pair have had a special connection, with Leslie saying that he had tried to get her a permanent spot on SNL in 2013.

Rock even went as far as to writing the foreword of Jones’ new book, Leslie F***ing Jones – which comes out on Tuesday (September 19th).

Leslie gave her own feelings towards the infamous slap, adding she was “mad” for a very long time.

“I know Will, too… I was like, you couldn’t handle that s**t afterwards. This is the Oscars. The whole world is watching,” she exclaimed.

She added that she had called out her friend Chris on why he did not run when he saw Will coming.
