Jennifer Lawrence slept with director of her one film she still ‘doesn’t understand’

Jennifer Lawrence had no idea what was going on in one of her most famous horror movies – even though she was sleeping with the director at the time.

The Hunger Games star starred in Mother! back in 2017, directed by Black Swan filmmaker Darren Aronofsky. She starred alongside Michelle Pfeiffer, Javier Bardem and Domhnall Gleeson in the bizarre thriller, which follows a couple whose relationship is tested when uninvited guests swarm their rural home and disrupt their quiet life.

But Jennifer admitted she didn’t have much of a clue what it all meant when chatting to host Andy Cohen on Watch What Happens Live. She was asked: “On a scale of one to totally confused, how much did you understand your film Mother!?”

Jennifer replied: “I’m going to be honest. Well, I was sleeping with the director, so I had CliffsNotes. So… five? Or a four. But if anybody needs any tips on understanding their films, you know what to do!”

Andy then joked back: “F*** the director?” as Jen replied: “Yeah!” No Hard Feelings star Jennifer dated Darren for a year before their break-up in November 2017. She later went on to tie the knot with art dealer Cooke Maroney in 2019, welcoming son Cy together.

Jennifer did try her best to explain the plot, telling Deadline: “The most important thing to know about this film before seeing it is that it’s all allegory. It’s all metaphor that’s tied to this narrative. It’s the creation and decimation of the universe, including Biblical themes and creation of religion.

“I represent Mother Earth, and what I have is Baby Jesus — if we guess the religion. I play this woman who has built this home from the ground up. I’m in a relationship with an artist who is obsessed with needing appreciation from me first, and then I’m not enough.”

Jennifer’s relationship with Darren broke down despite her admission the pair had “energy” – and she says she still doesn’t know how he felt about her. She told Vogue: “I was like; he’s hot… I remember I was holding my dog, and I shut the door, and when the door shut [after Darren left], I went, ‘Pippy, that’s called sexual tension’. He played hard to get for like nine months, maybe longer, which just killed me.”

But it was Jen’s reality TV obsession which soured the romance. The Mother! crew set up a ‘Kardashian tent’ for J-Law to get her fix of the Hulu reality show; she explained: “It was a tent that had pictures of the Kardashians and Keeping Up with the Kardashians playing on a loop – and gumballs. My happy place.”

Darren made it clear he wasn’t involved in setting up the tent, and said at the time: “What are you talking about, The Kardashians?”

And with Darren thinking of the flick as ‘his baby’, it made things harder for Jen to relax. She said in an interview for Variety’s Actors on Actors series: “Normally, I promote a movie, ask people to go see it, and then it’s just out of your hands.

“I normally just kind of let it go. Dating the director was different. We’d be on the [press] tour together, I’d come back to the hotel, and the last thing I want to talk about or think about is a movie.

“He comes back from the tour, and that’s all he wants to talk about, and I get it. It’s his baby. He wrote it. He conceived it. He directed it. I was doing double duty trying to be a supportive partner while also being like, ‘Can I please, for the love of God, not think about Mother! for one second?’”
